Matt Gaetz declares victory as House elects a new America First Speaker

Oct 25, 2023

The long GOP struggle over the next House Speaker has finally ended.

And conservatives are anxious to see what happens next.

But Matt Gaetz has declared victory after the House elected a new America First Speaker.

It all started with broken promises

It was just a few weeks ago when Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) led a group of House conservative stalwarts into vacating the Speaker’s chair and removing then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Despite the whining of some in the GOP, the fact was McCarthy had broken a number of promises he had made to win the Speakership in the first place.

McCarthy failed to oppose omnibus spending bills, refused to release all the video footage from January 6, and betrayed the trust and the deal he had with the conservatives in the House.

Now the House has elected Republican Congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana on the first vote after the House had been without a Speaker for three weeks.

Johnson, however, was not the first choice.

He was the House GOP’s fourth Speaker nominee since Kevin McCarthy was ousted back on October 3.

Both House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise withdrew prior to a floor vote when it became apparent they didn’t have the votes.

And House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan failed to receive enough support after three rounds of voting on the House floor.

The question now is just what kind of Speaker will Johnson be?

Matt Gaetz is claiming victory

While not a lot is known about the devout Christian Speaker, some on the right are pleased with his election.

Matt Gaetz even put out an email claiming victory upon Johnson’s election to the Speakership.

In his email to supporters, Gaetz wrote, “The Swamp lost today. And the American People WON!”

“I know one thing,” Gaetz added, “there’s not a single conservative in America who won’t appreciate the new direction we’re headed under our new leadership.”

“MIKE JOHNSON is the America-First conservative we DESERVE as Speaker of the House,” Gaetz continued. “He is a principled leader who is one of President Trump’s biggest supporters. Mike will support single-subject spending bills (what our fight has been about from the beginning) and is the biggest threat to the Swamp and the lobbyists who have held Congress hostage for too long.”

Gaetz went on to remind readers of the steps that led to Johnson’s election as Speaker and then wrote about the importance of standing up and fighting.

“We took a risk in standing up to the Swamp,” Gaetz noted. “We held the line. We braved their attacks. And at the end of the day . . . We delivered another sea change to disrupt ‘business as usual’ and get Congress back to working for the American People.”

“You’re going to see the results straight away in our work,” Gaetz promised. “I’m confident that under Speaker Johnson, we will put downward pressure on Washington’s spending and take real steps to DRAIN THE D.C. SWAMP.”

“And let this serve as yet another reminder,” Gaetz added, “when we come together, our America First Movement is the most powerful political force in our country’s history.”

While we hope Gaetz is correct, there have already been some warning signs as Johnson has seemingly changed his opposition to the continued blank check for Ukraine.

And pro-life activists are concerned that Johnson once helped kill pro-life legislation in Louisiana.

That’s why it is important for conservative activists to keep the pressure on and let Speaker Johnson know we won’t accept another McCarthy-like Speaker.
